Medical Treatment of ADHD in Restrictive Eating Disorders

The cooccurrence of ADHD and restrictive eating disorders (eg anorexia nervosa and ARFID) can present several challenges. Left untreated, the symptoms of ADHD are likely to interfere with the treatments for the eating disorder. While there are strategies that can be employed to try to mitigate this in group therapy settings, medications are known to be significantly more effective at reducing ADHD symptoms. However, such medications are also known to have potential adverse effects which can be particularly problematic in those with restrictive eating disorders. How common are these adverse effects actually with the various medication options? How can these medications be used safely and effectively in this patient population?

About the Speaker:

Jason Minion, MD

Dr. Jason Minion earned an undergraduate degree in Computer Science at John Hopkins University before graduating from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in 2011. He then completed the psychiatry residency program and child/adolescent psychiatry fellowship program at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2016. Following this, Dr. Minion provided general outpatient psychiatry for children, adolescents, and young adults for seven years through both a hospital-based practice and a private practice setting in Morristown, NJ. He also gained specialty experience in an autism center, collaborative care program with pediatricians, and an eating disorders day program. In October 2023, Dr. Minion joined the residential eating disorders team at Healing at Hidden River in Chester, NJ, and since January 2025 he has served as their Medical Director.
